      SSD (Solid State Drives) store data on flash memory, while HDD (Hard Disk Drives) use a mechanical, arm to write data to a spinning metallic "platter." HDD come in varieties that spin at different rates, and the faster they spin, the higher the data transfer rate. Early NLEs relied on 10,000rpm drives for video transfer. SSD offer even faster transfer rates and are much more stable in mobile environments, and are widely used in laptops and video field recorders like the Atomos line. Both types of drives can be used internally or externally, but unlike HDD, SSD won't break or corrupt data if jostled or dropped while writing files.
